2nd Test:

Installed tighter idler tension spring

Installed light duty spring between the PTO clips.

A lot smoother…

Looks and runs great!

Do you have a particular area/reason/ chore in mind for the sickle?

We'll be very unlikely to ever own one here because of rough terrain.

Interesting mechanisms.

I may use it here an there…

The 800 was just asking for a higher purpose and to my knowledge it hasn’t been done before so

I can say I really love all the moving parts!

@Manicmacanic   GOOD TURKEY DAY !  your operational  sickle  function  says it all . that running EASE is what I  regularly  go for , now from that point  , zero in on ANYTHING  THAT  IS NOT  IN THAT  PHASE OF  SMOOTH  , QUIET  FUNCTION . done a lot of that  , initially  its a train wreck , now obviousely  , much better  . the noise  / malfunction phase is the typical  set up I see  on anything  that has not been , cared for  .  when you  set up your  stuff  , with this baseline , its amazingly  different , another glairing  point  is consistent  , smooth easy  use, things I  have modified , have gone years  , without  failure or  issues , just  lubricant  and a look see , basic stuff , added tension spring , washers , elastic lock nuts , shoulder bolts , for smooth  lever  swing start . springs on my choke / throttle cables , to close them ?  try something , pete

Shortly after buying my new 1991 520H I saw a sickle bar in good condition at a yard sale for $25.  I thought that running it would require 2 right hands, one for motion and the other to control the sickle, so I didn't buy.  Now that I am older, and hopefully wiser, I need a kick in the rear for that mistake.  :(

I have some pine trees that I leave the lower branches touch the ground and a sickle would be great to trim the weeds under them, and that sickle bar, that I stupidly passed on, had a homemade guide to lift branches up and over so they weren't affected.  :eusa-doh:

@Manicmacanic  sounds and looks  happy in operation ,emphasis  is that you , corrected a common issue , got it out of the way , usually takes a little tweaking  , to  enhance that  , you have done well , try and use that  same idea  frame of mind , on other issues , that solid   , pto belt  says it all , did that on  top of mower decks , long  unsupported belt return , to spindle  pulleys , added , a  flat idler pulley  to deck , no more belt bounce , also  use lucas xtra  fd green chassis grease , cleaned out and hand packed every related bearing ..  quiet  smooth , also  spins up very easily at  pto lever engagement , no screaming  clutch , this is another , GOLD MINE , area to improve , loaded with  related  heavy drag . pete

Speaking of Lucas, going to add stop leak to oil sumps and such to swell the seals, have you?

There was a member converting a D to a manual but haven’t heard much on that?

I “think”, may be wrong, it’s D-160?

The hard question would be if you wanted to keep the engine mounting the same. Either routing the belt or using a very large right angle gearbox would be needed.

Just spitballing but the 8 speed itself would be fairly easy. Longer axles could be replaced with 2 or 3 inch spacers. Assuming the 6 bolt pattern is common enough to find them. As I understand it, the long D series axles were a failure point. Likely because folks treated them like a true sub compact tractor.

But yeah, it would be doable. Just depends on how much money and time you're willing to spend on it.

I always wanted to find a 5xi hydro to use a big engine on. The Eaton 1100 is facing forward on those transmissions. I have a Generac 33hp engine that would make a heckuva machine with that setup.

My Colossus project has these very things in usage.

My engine sets with the crankshaft fore n aft instead of side to side like most Horses.

I plan on using a right angle gear box mounted under the frame to transfer power rearward.

My axles are the longer GT14 type along with 3" thick wheel adapters.

6 hole adapters could be made...

Probably easier to just widen a set of 5 bolt wheels.

@Manicmacanic  have not  had any  sump related oil leaks , only thing I add to every oil change is ,  4 oz  of  RISLONE ZINK , SUPPLEMENT ,  thats bottle specs for   2+ qts of oil  , the oil  flushing / cleaning with that / and the  very noticeable  engine  running ease  is very apparent , realise this is a  very contentious  issue / area , none of my engines , smoke in any way  , or use oil at all . anything  I refer to  , has been in use for years , regularly experiment  with chronic issues . most of my  neighbor's , anything  sounds like a squeaky , squealing  mechanical  mess , especially love to see the  solid rust  cables ," oil "barely on the stick .  pete

Amazing how a neglected engine can keep on going!

I bought a Ford LGT for the M14, big risk as the dip stick tube was actually cut and sealed shut to accommodate a longer starter!

One never knew what’s inside this sump!

For $50 I took the gamble!

The liquid drained out of there, (flushed out) was beyond my capacity to describe!

Albeit, rebuilt and running today! Proprietary oil sump part of the motor mount assembly.

Amazing, simply out of this world!
