Handy Don 15,006 #4 Posted November 24 Some real innovative thinking there! Congrats to your son 👏 Tapping the brake drum shaft for front-drive power is so clever. Please elaborate on the sources for the front differential and the 90º gearbox amidship!
ri702bill 10,454 #5 Posted November 24 (edited) Excellent potential there! I see what I believe is a 1:1 chain drive to power a right-angle gearbox - also 1:1?? I ask because of the different sized tires front to rear as the circumference of both are different. Also, is there a one-way clutch hidden in there to allow the tractor to roll in neutral with the brake applied or to semi-address my above question? I take it that the front driveshaft is splined to allow it to lengthen & shorten too, as the shaft centerline is not coincident to the front axle pivot? You got a few bucks tied up there. Off to a good start. Bill Edited November 24 by ri702bill

953 nut 62,822 #8 Posted November 25 @meadowfield, your son is a chip off the old block, outstanding workmanship just like your "BENDY" and "C4" Wheel Horses. 2

Off to a good start. Bill it's not 1:1 drive it's under - 20/23, axle ratios and tyre diameters are factored in and ratio is spot on. Driveshaft is splined, but actually only moves 1/8" when the axle tilts. Brake drum works as before - it's a newer version of my 4x4 wheel horse I built 12 years ago. 2

Front differental is a peerless built into a custom casing, Rear box is from a mower. 3

AlexR 2,286 #18 Posted November 27 Wow that is a lot of machine work and fabrication to do the front axle. The result is really awesome though

I'm lucky if I can drill something on center with my lathe. This is some serious fabrication skills!
meadowfield 2,864 #21 Posted 4 hours ago (edited) A few more - he completed the drive flanges, so now the hubs are driven. onto final bits = the rear axle keyways were badly wallowed. So fresh 1/4 slots milled ready for much longer keys. Edited 4 hours ago by meadowfield

I'm hoping someday to figure out if I can use my recent drill press purchase.
