C-14 1970????

I was walking through a small engine shop and in the back was an older C machine. I thought it was a C-160 

 

but it had a 14 on the badge and the guy said it was a 1970 c-14, 8-spd. is this really a C-141 like the C-161? 
 

Why have I never heard of this machine?
 

The engine looked to be a kohler k341

 

i wanted to get a photo but i left my phone in my truck and he was closing. I was grabbing a brush attachment for my weedeater.

Perhaps it is a 1973 14hp 8-Speed model 1-0340 - (1-0340-8)

In 1973, all the previous "A/B/C/D" series were stripped of thier names and just given a hp and tranny type designation. 

 

Guessing it had to do with the sale of the company and AMC couldn't quickly come up with names that went well with Gremlin and Pacer...

this is exactly what the label looked like! 
So it makes a bit more sense now.

 

 

How does this differ other than HP from a C-160 it looked essentially like the same tractor.

The sticker was different. There never was a "C-140" but it is exactly what it would have been. 

 

 

In later years, to avoid any confusion of course, there were "C1x1" and "C1x5" models introduced.

So essentially it is the same transmission and other bits as a c-160 but with less HP. 
 

the owner said come back with more time and he would fire it up for me. He seemed to really like it!

Yep. 

 

And you'd be hard pressed to notice the 2hp difference. A K321 is a stout engine. 

 

That being said, the 16hp is a bit of a unicorn around here.

I have an old C145 Worker. It is a hydro, and runs all the attachments just fine. 48 inch deck, tiller etc. That 8 speed will have even more power since the hydro robs a couple HP by design. (less efficient) 

I have a lot of hills and the hydro is much more friendly in place of trying to clutch, brake and shift.

Well, apparently there was a C-140 but it was across the pond. See this post:

If it's a C-141 it should have the engine rocker cradle on it.

They made one run of 6 speeds ( 5073 ) and two runs of hydros ( sundstrands ) with 14 HP Kohlers in 1973.
