Dan 312-8 272 #1 Posted 9 hours ago I know this is not Wheel Horse related but there are many veteran members here, so it is kinda Wheel Horse related. Happy Veterans Day to all the veterans out there! 2 1
Mickwhitt 5,194 #2 Posted 6 hours ago Our remembrance day is the 11th of November which was begun after the first World War. The scale of utter devastation and loss of life staggered the world and so it was essential to mark this in a very public way, building memorials and keeping a day sacred to the memory. Hoping it would indeed be the war to end all wars. But only 25 years later it happened again. After that war there was no appetite to remember, just a need to forget. So no new cenotaph were built, names were tacked on to existing ones. Our last WW1 survivor died 14years ago so the final link was severed. We still mark bonfire night from an event in 1605, but not many know the actual story of what happened. Its the same for the wars, people attend the remembrance parades but dont really know why. Not the horrific details of what war really means. I guess it won't be long until we abandon the remembrance parades altogether, unless another war erupts that involves us directly. The way things are looking with Russia that won't be very far away.... 1
