A small glasspack straight-thru muffler would mellow it down a tad, like a stack does....

The longer pipe sure changes the sound. Saw one GT with the pipe run all the way out the back of the tractor. Had a really nice rap to it. Did not sound like a typical single cylinder small engine.

Very nice!

I’ve made a few, they are fun to tune the sound.  A bolt, a washer, a cut or convoluted washer, they all make a difference.  Have fun!

I did finally build a real muffler.  It sounds great!

Here one I made for an 18 HP Vanguard. There is nothing in the 2"" tail pipe or the 3/4 tubing up to it. Just the 1" washer with the two 3/4" washer spaced out with drilled out 1/4" nut spacers.

It doesn't give the diameter of the pipe.my guess is it's too small diameter for a 12 Kohler.

As I recall it the mufflers on 2 cycle mini-bikes have some back pressure engineered into them, Not too sure that would work for you.
