That’s the type I use, and I grind the one little protruding metal bit so it can’t turn and scrape the cone pulley.

So if I use a spring as you suggest, that would benefit as well. So the spring goes to where exactly off that clip? Frame hitch pin? Can you get a picture of one of yours? There’s also a way to use a spring on the throw lever, we discussed this quite a ways back whenever I first built the 800 Special.

I do that often.. at least on one side.  Some people use chapstick, to give that wax ring style seal, but not stick together.  That’s a hot rodder carburetor trick some old guy at work (my boss) taught me!

@Manicmacanic  glairing to me ,regularly  look at  ease of functional operation , EVERYWHARE , BASICALLY  HOW CAN I , IMPROVE THIS ? your related FRAME MOUNT ,  to swing arm   is called a hitch pin clip , simply changed direction of pin   circle mount s to  allow an extension spring  for a  noise stopping /  clearance verified , connection . done a lot of this simple type of  problem  eliminating , circle to circle  spring tension stops the buzzing  hardware  noise .  regularly do this type of  trials .also related to this, is pulley  lubrication issues , INCREMENTAL  bearing hang ups , regularly  starts a BELT BOUNCE . thats a whole  different issue . thats what led me to  a  grease , clean / change out , in every related bearing  , on decks , have this in play for years  , no noise or vibration , or bearing failures , also have smooth / quiet  pto lever engagement  , never burned out a clutch disc . working on a tire  chain idea now , pete

Yeah, that’s great for stuff you must open up more than once, I certainly hope this won’t be the case!

You know that is a simple thing, now that I get where you’re going with the spring, long as it doesn’t interfere.

Another challenge will be the sickle bar and related vibrations

@Manicmacanic  often refer to  using a roller stool , so i can  look at / watch  what's going on , ironically  many corrections / eliminations  , are  a small adjustment away  .  did a lot of that  on my first  plow frame , heim joint conversion / steering quadrant  detailing , squeeze lever  function was the  main issue  in swing ease ,  original  bolt nut  connections , were restricting  , initial  swing . cure for , bolt / nut  setting  / function ?  simple SHOULDER BOLT  , ensuring  solid / smooth swing , flat washers  let you  get a  perfect  smooth / easy swing , having a helper  to engage anything  , lets you WATCH  WHAT IS SCREWING UP . roller stool  , lets you comfortably , look at every phase . try out a shoulder bolt  , with  flat washers  , regular nut ? dial in a perfect lubricated swing , tension ,   movement , then remove regular nut  and replace it with an ELASTIC LOCK NUT  , to hold that  setting , easy , pete

Here is the sequence for mounting the bar

All laid out

x.jpeg.13ea1924cab90b7638d884f40421baa3.jpeg

Preparing to install the hidden bolt, using Blue locktite

IMG_2273.jpeg.ce7dcd96775859bcac6f116ea37208d9.jpeg
Inserting the adjacent bolt temporarily to get aligned, leveled enough to get a few threads in on the hidden bolt.

Once those are fitted the hidden bolt is tightened and temporary removed.

Shoe weldment gets attached and tightened

Attached the section bar and make sure everything is aligned and the pin “good & tight!”

Waiting on a 5” longer travel hook as this is an unorthodox install!

@Manicmacanic   like the  ease of function , very good job on that  , that  belt bounce is telling you  of a related issue , an idler pulley  pushing / pulled  from the  front side , with a spring  mount set up  would really  ENHANCE that  function . did that to all my mower decks on the back side of belt return , that also  helps any related bearing  that  is incrementally  hit with a bounce . only a suggestion , NOTHING SARCASTIC  about it . or intended . would have to see related areas for  bolt on / weld set up . that would be a flat idler pulley to push against  the belt . paint it red , only you would know , pete

The sickle was not lowered all the way down, once lowered the belt tightens off a spring on the existing idler.

However, should such a bounce be irritating, I have a nice flat idler just waiting to roll!

That’s fine, but a flat pulley would be best.

I can take a second video and set it low, watch for the bounce and plan accordingly

@Manicmacanic  you just said it  , this is something I regularly do  on a repetitive  issue , might be a related part  , or  lever / linkage  set up  .  do a lot of   roller stool  watching  on problems . your  first shot of  ease of pto lever engagement , pulled me right in , thats how my  levers work , might even be an angular  bolt on  pulley  mount , for  bolt mount near by  , figure what you need for pulley mount  , has to be adjustable for tension . or spring control ,  when you start thinking like this , opportunities  suddenly  appear . glad for you . pete

Yes, it’s a continuous process isn’t it…

I did re-examine the idler tension spring, it was insufficient!

See the replacement is good & tight!

The added light duty spring clip to clip

The over-all result is excellent!

@Manicmacanic  your pictures say it all ! the added spring to the  pto swing mount , hitch pin clip . and a lot of this is simple , its the look at of  what's going on , and making  little  changes to  failures . the other thing i did was , remove the  pto brake  pad  , did that after  my lucas re greasing  , that entire pto set up spins  smoothly / and silently  . also  removed drag to the cone area . cleaned out the cone inner needle bearing , lucas green grease  550 deg flash point  , this one of the gold mine areas , I often refer to for improvement , been bombproof for me , thanks for trying  this out  ,  pete
