New to me Raider 12 - Also my First WH

I just picked up a new to me Wheel Horse that I bought a few week back. The decals identify it as a Raider 12, 6 Speed.

If anyone can elaborate further on this information, I would appreciate it.

Also, I went to check the oil and I did not see a dip stick. Did I just miss it or is this a replacement engine? It seems like a good tractor but I will not tried to start it until I change the oil. (I bought it as a non runner.)

I do have several JD 200 series garden tractors so I do know a little about the Kohler K series engines.

You have a 1970 Raider 12.

Look for a square-headed pipe plug on the top of the right rear corner of the engine block just above the end of the starter motor. 1970 is the change-over year for dipstick style and yours might be early enough to still use the screw-in type.

Thanks for the info and thanks for the welcome! I thought it was one of two plugs, the one on the block shoulder as Terry described and Mike illustrated or the one above the drain plug.

New question, same topic. Using the K 301 engine I have on the bench, I compared where the oil level would be on the 212 and compared it to the block on the R 12. I know you can not fill the oil up to the shoulder. I tried pulling the lower plug and there was obviously oil above the plug level. I will not pull the plug until I drain the block but I do need to know how far to refill the engine. My thought is that you fill at the shoulder plug until the oil starts to flow out of the lower, non drain plug. Thanks again.

The plug I described (and Mike pictured) should have the dipstick attached to the bottom.

The oil level in the large sump K's is just below the pan to block joint when full. (a little over 2 quart capacity)

After you wipe the dipstick clean, reinsert it in the hole, but do not screw it back in. Just let it set on the block.

If the plug is suppose to have a dip stick attached, that's a problem. I used a 9/16" allen wrench to remove both plugs. The drain plug does have a square block on it. The engine has the same type of sump as the K 301 that is on my old Kohler generator. I'll look at it tomorrow. Thanks Terry.

e-rancher, mine is actually red, just has a ton of dirt on it, lol, except for the cooling fins, the red is worn off of those.

I called Kohler about the engine. The engine was made in '94 so it is a replacement engine. The rep told me to look for a plate with three bolts. I never found the plate but did find a plug at the front of the engine. I removed the plug and it did have a dip stick. The plug was right under the discharge end of the muffler. I moved the plug to the back side of the engine since that location makes it more easily accessible. The bad new is that when I removed the plug, which is right above the sump, about 3/4 of a quart of oil drained from the engine. I am estimating the engine had about 3 quarts of oil. Hopefully, it was the flat that halted the use of the machine. Two quarts of fresh oil brought the oil level to the "full" mark.

The next issue is a cut battery cable (also possible cause for discontinued use). The battery that came with the tractor is holding a charge but it has the regular lawn mower type post, not the round post most often found on these older garden tractors. The PO had some bolts going through the holes of the clamp and they were all fairly corroded. I have to replace the one cable so I'm going to just replace both.

At the same time, I am also working on the throttle. I pulled the gas tank and the tray that supports it to get better access to the cables. I plan to clean out the tank and replace the fuel lines. While I was pulling the tray, I noticed something. Is this thing suppose to have a cigarette lighter?
