702 clutch/belt issues

Been messing with the 702. Trying to get drive belt to stop moving when clutch is engaged. Seems like no matter what I adjust it makes little to no difference. The tab on front of belt guard is broke off. I repaired/straightened belt guard, belt retainer bolt near transmission pulley holding belt guard on is installed properly. I made a tab for front of belt guard & it made no difference.  Replaced belt too. Also all the pulleys spin freely & grooves are free of rust, debris, etc. I gotta be missing something so simple....

The belt set-up is desinged to slip at the point where you have it tight.  Try putting a 90 degree bend in that metal piece to not make it tight against the belt, but to funnel any slack toward the drive pulley.  I know this is not your engine, but the bottom of belt guard should help funnel the slack toward the drive pulley

I also notice surface rust on your drive pulley.  All 3 of your pulleys need to shiny clean and wiped with mineral spirits so the belt can slide around the drive pulley, thus letting the input pulley on the trans to stop so you can shift gears without grinding.  Clean the pulleys and bend that stay you have there.  You want that stay to keep the belt on the pulley, but not so much that it can't slip on the drive pulley when you put slack in the belt.  Think of funneling it in a direction.  :occasion-xmas:

  Your pulleys do not look clean and shiney...the belt needs to slide around that drive pulley when slack is put there.

   One other small point...a system that works like I am talking about will keep your horse from bucking like a bronco when you let out the clutch.  An unexpected wheelie can put a small Wheel Horse on top of you.  Always start out in low throtle and keep the front wheels on the ground.  :bow-blue:

Better if the wire is bent and supporting the belt on the back half of the pulley.

The way it is now it's holding the belt tight into the groove so it can't rise out of it to allow it to slip.

Is that my 702 ML ... maybe I just come take it off your hands... :lol:

Seriously I had the same problem with a 753 and now with a 856 that I haven't messed with yet. 

Only way I could cure it was with a tab on the clutch idler that pushes the belt forward. I must've had the guard off on and tweaked the front bottom tab a hundred times.  

Don't remember if I made one or took one off a parts tractor. 

A suburban but same thing you get the idea. All of my tractors with it factory it is welded on 90 degree to the clutch arm.

Is this a shifting issue or only when left running in neutral? I had the brake adjusted too tight on my 857 and it wouldn't allow the idler pulley to move enough to slack the belt. If It wouldn't let me shift even when stopped unless I went from gear to gear fast

Hopefully tonight I'll get a chance to look at it again. Start by cleaning up pulley more & adjust the belt tab more at a right angle. Its approximately 1/8" off belt/pulley. May consider idler pulley belt tab if I have to. The clutch/brake pedal originally was way far forward & had to be pushed almost as low as stirrup & it still grinds. Was like that when I 1st drove it onto trailer.

@ML3  done a lot  of  functional detailing  to  REPEDITIVE  PROBLEM  AREAS . nothing sarcastic , but , thats what you actually want  , for tracking  / related  continuous  issue . have a helper  at home ?  someone  to  let  YOU   the same issue ?  often refer to a  roller stool , for a direct look / see . personally , that tiny bearing idler pulley , is an area  , that I have always  enhanced , and also  any and all  linkage movement  areas . have also  firmed up  connection ends / lube , makes for a solid / smooth  transfer of  intention . don,t have any of the earlier  models , so its just an idea , hope you find it , pete

Looks like I got it figured out. I re-cleaned/sanded all the pulleys even though they weren't bad. Somehow managed to get the right adjustment of linkages etc. Seems like a very small margin where it all works. Got snowblower working good too! Now I need to do some fine tuning of the throttle at governor.
