I found an old hydro drive, and somewhere along the line somebody thought it was a good idea to paint it and covered every dataplate on it.

 

Look at these pictures...Can somebody identify what this is ?

 

As big as the engine is I thought it was a 16HP, maybe a C160, but I got some of the paint off the engine plate and it looks like it says 10HP, the engine seems much bigger than that though.  Is there any other numbers on the old Kohler engines to make identification  

 

It cranks, drives, the PTO works, good tires not rotted, deck is kinda crusty, and it's flithy, but it's got the old style floor shift drive control which I much prefer. I sold the 314H I had because I never could learn to love the column mount controls.

The 10 through 14 HP engines are physically identical and have 9 cylinder head bolts. 

 

The 16 HP has 10 head bolts. 

 

The only infallible way to determine the size of a 10 to 14 HP is to remove the cylinder head and measure the bore and stroke.

I had no idea they were all the same size, I guess since my 314 has more tins on it, this one looked bigger, and haven't had them side by side yet to compare. Speaking of engine tins was mid 70's models more open than the mid 90's models

 

I was hoping to find a 10 or 12 to make a dedicated mower with so this worked out pretty good for me then. So what was the main differences between the B and C series machines ?

In the mid 70s there were two B series. 

 

1974/5 was a Mid Frame. 

1976/7 was a Long Frame like a C series. 

 

The differences were in the options like lighting, steering wheel, seats....

 

B series were also limited to 8 and 10 HP engines for 74/5. A 6 HP engine became available for 76/7. 

 

C series engines were 10 to 16 HP. 

 

I'm sure there are other differences I'm not recalling.

Is there any difference in the mower decks that fit them.

come to think of it I think the 42RD deck I just reworked came off of a B80. I'll have to do some looking

maybe....  

 

All mid 70s long frame attachments are the same connection type BUT the Mid frame wheelbase is over two inches shorter so the larger mowers may be too big between the tires.

this machine has 8in front wheels, and rub marks on the deck that came on it, so I may find myself limited in someway maybe. I'll have to run it and see

8" was the standard then. 

 

Maybe a 36RD would be better.
