Recycler deck maintenance

Recommended Posts

I've had this deck maybe 8 yrs. Every year I take the mulching insert out to clean. Lots of grass powder gets trapped between the deck and insert. 2 years ago I coated the insert with Por 15. I think it's held up well.

Here is all the grass that was between the deck and insert.grass.jpg.83325086593ba972ec25279cc7e79f54.jpg

Blade side.

You can see how much grass gets under the wings

Wire brushed both sides of the insert

I used stainless steel bolts so they come off easier. Wire brushed both sides of the wings. Coated one side and will do the other side when it dries.

I sprayed truck bedliner coating on the inside of the shell. It has held up well. The insert must protect the spindles some as there is no corrosion on the aluminum.d8.jpg.6e582ba00898da0c7dd89666b6c8aa7a.jpg

Shell cleaned. I will coat around the spindle area of the shell as there is some minor pitting. I also will coat the edges.

More to come once things dry.

Nice! You are fortunate to have the version where the recycler portion is removable, not welded in.

Annual meticulous maintenance pays off in the long run.

Everything coated with POR-15. Greased the deck wheels and lubed the rollers.

what's the advantage/disadvantage of the por 15 product versus cleaning a decks rust off with wire brush etc ------- or sand blasting -- then applying standard primer and final coats paint --- or optionally, using the various paint products used for rusty surfaces? eg: Rust Reformer - Rust Fix, etc???

POR-15 dries really hard and seems to hold up well for me at least. I've tried Rust Reformer and it didn't last at all.

i have been cleaning the decks underneath down to clean metal for many years  --   sometimes having had professionally sand blasted, then I painted -- but thereafter, i also do periodic pressure wash during and at end of season -- plus,  i do the oil treatment so grass doesn't stick attach -- but i also don't mow wet grass - - so my decks usually stay very clean -- but was not aware of the particular benefit of the Por so i appreciate the info
