Wheel Horse 314H

My wheel horse 314 H will barely move in reverse and has some trouble in forward.  I know that there is a connection behind the dash board for the transmission.  I think it probably needs to be bled but I don't know how to do it.  Thanks for the help. Brian

The 314-H has an Eaton 1100, and what is behind the dash is the hydraulic lift, which runs on a separate coaxial pump. It has nothing to do with the drive side of the hydrostatic other than they share the same sump. 

 

That being said if your tractor has the motion control under the steering wheel you are correct- part of the linkages are behind the dash. It is a mechanical connection and bleeding air from the system won't affect wheel motion. 

 

My only question would be if the oil level is full, and if the tranny has been serviced regularly. 

 

The filter (if OEM or at least correct) has no bypass and will restrict oil flow if not serviced. Of course that is only one possibility and would be very bad news as well. 

 

Just for giggles, I would check if you have slop between the motion control lever and the cam on the transmission. It takes only a small amount to reduce the effectiveness of input vs response. The first time my 520-H acted up I thought my transmission was going bad. Turned out to be a loose nut that robbed cam travel.

The motion controller is in the tunnel in front of an d below the seat. Give everything in there a good cleaning. Clean the Eaton transmission while your at it.  Then look for slop in linkage, etc.

Also check the cam and cam plate for wear. My 1989 520-H had both cam and cam plate badly worn and was extremely hard to shift out of reverse. I replaced both cam and cam plate along with real brass lined 1/4" hiems joints. 

You have a lot more places to check with the column leaver then the older style like mine.

This is the motion control cam on the Eaton 1100 hydro.    Check that the cam has full forward and reverse travel.

Check the drive belt from the engine to the transmission, also check the idler pulley.  Then check that the pulley isn't loose on the shaft, also check your wheel hubs to see if they are slipping on the axle.

When I picked up my 418-C it wouldn't preform well forward or reverse. I removed the tunnel cover and found a stash of black walnuts some critter had stashed there. The nuts were keeping the lever from moving all the way in either direction, tossed out the nuts and problem solved.
