Torque recommendations for spindle housings

Recommended Posts

Does anybody know the torque spec for the alloy spindle housings

I'm getting near done on my 42RD rehab project

I'm asking about the 4 3/8" bolts on each of the housings

@JOHN C.  just curious , did you add  another idler pulley  to the backside of  the idler  pulley belt return ? like this , that long , USUPPORTED RUN  is a major cause of bearing  issues .very easy to set up , and very effective , did that years ago  , experimenting  with ,REPEDITIVE  PROBLEM , added that to my 3 decks , no problems , pete

3/8" - 16 bolts in aluminum dry torque 12.4 ft lbs = 148 in lbs

Lubricated threads 9.3 ft lbs = 112 in lbs

Thank you GW

Pete, Not yet, I want to run it first to figure out placement, you'll be proud I stuffed those housings full of green lucas.

Since galvanic corrosion is a problem when using steel bolts with aluminum I would suggest using a good marine grade corrosion inhibitor as a thread lubricant.

Torque spec. - tighten until the bolt breaks or the threads strip, then back off 3/8 of a turn.

@Johnc  glad for the lucas green . been absolutely  bombproof for me , as far as the  added idler goes , you do not need much  push back on that belt , that area  is just right , for light push back , placed  the pully  on deck  at best spot  to be able to gain from its placement , as slight as it is , it  removes that shuddering bounce . just drilled a hole  used a 3/8 smooth shoulder bolt, no threads on bearing spin area , washer under deck  and washer on top of pulley with an elastic lock nut . my regular reference to belt and bearing  issues , have eliminated my  problems . by the way  did you  clean out and re grease  the mule drive bearings ?  same scenario , those 6203 bearings , wide grease shields  , really do stand up with lucas green . typically  a horse problem , is multi staged , not just one spot / but  related / connected . done a lot of that , thanks for the shout , let me know , pete

Realistically an inch pound torque wrench should be used so added those values to the original reply.

Fastening something to sheet metal ain't rocket science, having basic mechanic skills is all that is needed.
