5060 Transmission

I decided not to wait a couple more days since the motor oil was looking good when I drained it. And I'm impatient.

No issues at all. New seals, a real gasket and some red paint and this thing is good to go. :)

Did the limited slip work correctly   e.g. jacked up and you turn a wheel the other goes the same way??  Lowell has the spring for the differential as long as you are this far in....

The spring itself is one “wear area” in an LSD.

The other is also inside the differential--here the pinions’ teeth rub against the walls of their housing (pushed there by the spring) whenever the rear wheels rotate at different speeds.

As @Achto illustrated, once the teeth/housing combo wears sufficiently, the pinions move away from the axle gears and eventually slip--catastrophically.

IMHO, the “use case” for excess wear would be frequent turning while pulling heavy loads, especially without adequate clean oil in the transaxle.

(The LSDs are unique in having “floating” pinion gears; all other WH diffs have pinion axles)

Yup. Working fine. All bearings are good.

I certainly would not part out a good transmission that just needs seals and a gasket.  You're in a good location where it should not be too hard to sell as is,,,or made whole.  :occasion-xmas:

I don't know much about the history. Based on the build up on the axles and how difficult the keys were to get out I'd say it's been quite a few years. Every transmission I've opened up after flushing with Motor Flush has been like this one. I can't say it's the reason but I'll keep using it. I think the lube was changed fairly recently. It drained out pretty clean. :)

I never intended to part out the transmission Steve. Being a 5060 this one might end up on my reborn B-80 since it is now dedicated as a snow/dirt pusher. :)

If you do decide to sell it, can I have dibs?

Well, another member here claimed that but it's a matter of shipping. In any case it will be a spell before anything happens.

The hubs have two setscrews with both having a factory ground flat. I didn't know they did that back then

To the best of my knowledge there were NO double set screw hubs until around 1980. And those were the thicker style.

Not the old "five star" type.

If those late 60s hubs had double set screws someone added or swapped them.

I didn't know the years Eric but a swap was my thoughts too. Not only double set screws but the thicker guys as well.

Sorry young man. IF I let it go I have to honor the first dibs but, as I said, shipping could play a part. :)
