pfrederi 18,797 #1 Posted yesterday at 06:57 PM Anyone have an idea of why WH (noted for simplicity and commonality) decided to have the axle housing on hydro slightly bigger than gear drives??? Same 1-1/8" axles diameters, same needle bearings same 1533 bearing but require different seals...I had to modify my CycloVac hitch to fit the Hydro housing..
ebinmaine 73,577 #2 Posted yesterday at 07:15 PM I'm pretty curious about this one too having been bitten in the past. I had made up a homegrown plow rear hitch on an 8-speed. Didn't exactly want to bolt on to the hydro so I had to do some Cutty Pasty...
WHX?? 52,200 #3 Posted 23 hours ago You lost me Paul which is fairly easy to do but are you saying the seals aren't 1 3/8 OD?
JoeM 8,539 #4 Posted 23 hours ago Really never measured the housings. I always thought the seals in the gear drive were delicate and flimsy, even tho they work good. As far as the seals, maybe they wanted the bigger seals but started out with the small ones??? Then made the hydro casting and updated the seal arrangement when the castings were designed??? Maybe the larger seals allow a larger spring to hold in the motor oil better???

WH#6449was seal used in Sunstrand and Eaton Hydros ...Bore 1.624 CR 11124 WH 100443 used in gear drives Bore 1.375 CR 11050 I guess WH wanted a spring to help hold in the thinner fluid??? Handy Don 14,254 #6 Posted 3 hours ago (edited) The thread started on the question of "why are the outer dimensions of the castings for hydro vs. 8-speed different at the place where the front blade bracket attaches?" Nothing directly to do with bearings or seals. Edited 1 hour ago by Handy Don

Maybe if WH decided they wanted to use a larger diameter seal they thought there was insufficient casting at the end of the axle housing to put it in so the made the axle housing a bit bigger??? 1
rmaynard 16,444 #8 Posted 2 hours ago Since the weight of a hydro is significantly more than a manual, maybe they beefed up the housings for a bit more strength.
