pfrederi 18,793 #1 Posted 14 hours ago Anyone have an idea of why WH (noted for simplicity and commonality) decided to have the axle housing on hydro slightly bigger than gear drives??? Same 1-1/8" axles diameters, same needle bearings same 1533 bearing but require different seals...I had to modify my CycloVac hitch to fit the Hydro housing..
ebinmaine 73,576 #2 Posted 13 hours ago I'm pretty curious about this one too having been bitten in the past. I had made up a homegrown plow rear hitch on an 8-speed. Didn't exactly want to bolt on to the hydro so I had to do some Cutty Pasty...
WHX?? 52,198 #3 Posted 12 hours ago You lost me Paul which is fairly easy to do but are you saying the seals aren't 1 3/8 OD?
JoeM 8,533 #4 Posted 12 hours ago Really never measured the housings. I always thought the seals in the gear drive were delicate and flimsy, even tho they work good. As far as the seals, maybe they wanted the bigger seals but started out with the small ones??? Then made the hydro casting and updated the seal arrangement when the castings were designed??? Maybe the larger seals allow a larger spring to hold in the motor oil better???
