Normally I'd agree .... I don't have one for this filter in this position.

Why buy one, just visit local u-pull-it junkyard and find a car where the seat belt has been cut (often done in wrecks) and cut out the webbing , most will let you have it for free - then make your own any size you want.. Can wrap it around any handy large bolt or old axle shaft or what have you (Though square bar stock does have a slight advantage)   I have a half dozen pieces of old seat belt webbing laying around for just such purposes.

Your idea is great in principle but doesn't work for me up here for two reasons.

 

1. Time. 

2. Money. 

 

Here in Southern Maine the days of being able to walk into a salvage yard are nearly gone.

The nearest one to my house is about 20 minutes away so I'll spend 40 minutes on the road to go there.

They're in business to make money so you don't walk out of there with anything for less than $5 or $10.

Then I have to go to the trouble of cutting one out, bringing it home, melting the end so it doesn't fray. Drill the hole in the webbing. Drill the hole in the bar. Melt the webbing so it doesn't fray.

 

I absolutely love creating things with my own hands. I love the satisfaction. I love the learning experience.

 

 

In this particular case I paid less than $10 to get a good quality vintage tool delivered to my house....

Yeah until you need a strap wrench that fits around a flywheel , or one to fit around a car tire to get your bead seated while inflating after a tire change, or some handy dandy strapping to sling some heavy painted piece while it is being bolted up... all things which I have used such webbing for, not just oil filters...  The stuff can be VERY handy for many things other than oil filters...

Definitely agreed. 

I have a flywheel strap wrench as well.

I've had a little limited success on inflating tires and getting the bead seated but I have done that too. I use ratchet straps of varying sizes for that and holding heavy stuff off the ground.

 

Just yesterday we moved this engine with that method.

I read here a long time ago that you had a secret weapon for handling engines, I suppose the orange straps went around the BBT?
