C-105 backfiring

Recommended Posts

Mysteriously started backfiring. I noticed some fuel as well around the fuel pump and hose clamps missing or have slid down. This machine I got a month ago and was running well.

Could the fuel pump be causing the issue?

I assume I need to pull the head and check the valves?

Have another condenser you could try or temporarily remove it and give it a try. They can do weird things when they start to fail.

If an engine idles well, but runs erratically when revved up, like it hits and misses, pops and backfires, then chances are, it needs a new condenser/capacitor. And always install a condenser/capacitor with the wire facing downward so rain water and/or when washing off engine, water will not enter inside condenser/capacitor, ruining it. With water inside the condenser, this will also allow it to idle well, but cause it to run erratically when revved up.

It runs on choke and at low idle. At high idle it pops and fires and just sounds like my unruly teenager. The guy I point it from didn’t points and condenser but no idea if he did it correctly.

I have points and condenser for a raider 14 I haven’t tore into yet. I assume they are the same but will check.

what if the new owner power washed it. 🤣

this is making more sense to me now.

if I get into it and there is water is it fouled or salvageable. If I recall the part is not spendy.

Once water has gotten into a condenser it is junk.

I am presuming that your Wheel Horse C-105 has the Kohler K241AS engine as it left the factory with. If this is the case the condenser is Kohler part #  230722 and should be easily found at any small engine parts supplier.

Pull the carburetor and clean it properly.  If it is adjustable, follow the manual.
