522xi spark on only left cylinder

Is there a way to verify if it's something other than a dead coil before having to pull engine shrouding?  I'm assuming both coils have a grounding wire on them too, or maybe not with DSAM?  Do you have to pull shrouding to get to the grounding wires (if they exist)?  Any other ideas?  I believe I have DSAM because there is a rectangular box on the shroud.  It's a 1998 model.  I also have a 518xi and 520xi that are both 1998's too and they both have no rectangular box on the shrouding.

Here's the engine tag for the 1998 522xi:

If you got the black box, it's a smart spark.

I have seen different ways to get at the wiring but I just bite the bullet and pull the engine. It is a 45 minute job if you have a way to lift it out.

There is a kit to convert the system over to standard ignition and it includes a flywheel. I have done two. One I changed the flywheel with the kit, the other I just used two new coils. Some have said using just the new coils (because the flywheel key is a few degrees different)  makes it hard to start because of the timing being advanced. I did not notice any issue just changing over the coils and eliminating the smart spark.

While the engine is out it is a good time to check the rear seal and change it if necessary. Also good time to clean up the charging stator
