New brakes for EJ the 8n

I put an order for pieces parts to rebuild the brakes on EJ the 8n Tuesday.  Ordered through Steiner online.  The package showed up today.  The next job will be rebuilding the brakes - in the middle of our 20 acre wood in Ky.  My 'shop' there is a HF temporary tent garage on a dirt floor. 

 

My main concern is getting the hubs off of the axle.  Since I have some amount of axle oil dribbling out of the outside of both wheels, I'm hoping they won't put up too much of a fight - even though the axle and hubs fit together on tapered splines.

 

Will probably be October before we get time for a trip to Ky.

The N-series Fords are notorious for weak brakes to begin with.  And if your axle seal is leaking, that fluid will get into the brakes causing more problems.

  I had a set of axle seals on that order as well.  With the oil seepage on the wheels, I'm assuming that the seals have failed, and have oil soaked the linings.

@8ntruck  just a suggestion , on the hubs , use KROIL into  the set bolts , like to  have holes  at 12 o clock , kroil filled , when sitting any drive  movement  will help the kroil creep. did mine days out  , made it easy , also like a PACKING PULLER  for the side seal  pull out , tiny access hole , screw in , pull out , also used a conveyor belt  material  for  brake  band .  once used / set  , never moved , pete

 getting the seals off won't be an issue.  On an 8n, the axle seals are a press fit in a sheet metal retainer that bolts to the end of the axle housing - easy peasy.

 

Now, getting to the seals involves pulling the hubs - potentially not so easy peasy.

A bit more research on the cause of oil leaking onto the rear wheels suggests that the splines on the hub and possibly the axle are worn.

 

Anybody got pictures of or can describe what the worn splines look like?
