BrianX128 109 #1 Posted August 26 My dad has had an older Honda 4518 for as long as I can remember. Last year he stopped using it because the deck had two big rust holes in it that needed fixed. He got a new mower but hated how it mulched leaves and his yard is full of trees. I got the deck welded up for him and when we went to fire it up, it makes an AWFUL noise when the PTO isn't engaged. Here's a video, which doesn't do it justice how loud the noise is: If you turn the PTO on and off a few times, it smells like an 18 wheeler just had all of its brakes catch on fire. I can see that there is a metal "brake" that pushes against the PTO when it's not engaged, but the PTO isn't slipping on it. Everything technically "works" and outside of having 3 year old ethanol gas and a dirty carb it runs ok outside of an occasional pop which I think is it running too lean and likely needs a carb cleaning or adjustment which I'm holding off on until it has fuel in it that smells like fuel. Anyone have any idea about that PTO noise though? It comes from that exact area but we've looked at it for a bit and nothing is loose or stands out.
oldlineman 1,572 #2 Posted August 26 Sounds like PTO brake is hanging up or you have some weld someplace that it shouldn't be, just my thoughts.
ri702bill 9,696 #3 Posted August 26 Brian - remove the deck drive belt ftom the PTO & try again. Noise gone - deck. Noise still there - tractor. 2

BrianX128 109 #5 Posted August 29 I didn't explain this very well, that video is with the deck off. That's what is so puzzling. It's also with the PTO not even spinning the pulley on the front of the engine the belt would go on. When the handle is forward the pto is engaged like on a wheel horse and the pulley is spinning. In that state its completely quiet. When I pull the handle back and it slows and the pto brake pushes against it, then it howls. I wondered if there's a throwout style bearing like on a manual trans that is making the noise. I had an old diesel f350 that screeched if I had the clutch pressed in but was fine with the petal out.
