Grease relief point on deck blade spindles?

Recommended Posts

I know the book says give 'em five pumps at a certain hourly interval, but is there anywhere the grease can escape if they get too many pumps?

How do I know the bearings get enough grease if I don't see the excess as on any other grease fitting on the WheelHorse?  I have noticed that some spindle assemblies include an O ring on the jack shaft under the pulley, maybe to seal in the grease?

I don't want to blow any seals from over greasing, but I want to keep the 1993 48" deck rolling.  It takes me 3-4 hours each mowing with the 1997 314-8 in Hi 1, some times dropping to Lo 3.

Thanks for any light you can shed ...

I like turning the spindles when greasing. 5 slow even shots should be fine if the spindles were greased right from the start.

You can blow out the seals if pumping to hard and fast.

You should see grease coming out under the blade cup or under the pulley.

Thanks JoeM.  "greased right from the start."  is what bothers me. None of my Horses front wheels were shimmed properly, somewhere there are bags of shims lying around getting dusty.

I was just wondering if the factory put a relief pathway in the spindle assembly.  I assume that the O ring under the spindle pulleys was to keep grease off of the belt.
