Old non running 8 hp Kohler engine questions

Recommended Posts

FLtractor

Evening,

Came across a listing randomly tonight, seller states hasn’t ran in 2 years. Asking $60.00. OBO. About 150 miles round trip drive. Any chance the carb and engine are still good? Or better chance no good due to possible regular ethanol gas used (no idea what kind of fuel used just a thought) and left sitting, corrosion ect? What’s it realistically worth? I have a 856 with 8 HP Kohler now.. would it be good idea to have this as backup engine and or spare carb since I’m doing the fuel system on my 856 currently? Cant post picture due to it being to large despite mutiple attempts to resize and or take several half pictures

Do you have an engine serial number. That would help determine age. Also an engine spec number would help determine what is off off.  If it’s off of something like a tiller or wood splitter it may not have that many hours on it. The tins and rope or electric starter are worth more than $60. There’s a good chance the carb is good but needs cleaning. The carb may need a new bowl of water/ethanol ate into it.
It itspainte dark blueish green or gray there’s a good chance it is a factory replacement engine or short block.

Thank you for all the info. This is currently the only photo I have. Waiting on response from seller in regards to possible serial #, what it came off of and fuel used. Based on this picture alone is it even compatible with a Wheelhorse 856? What else can you tell By this picture?

Looks like JD green. The oil pan may be different, but you can always swap you existing one on to it.

Seeing the bumpout on the blower housing tells me that it is not a S/G style engine. Not that it couldn't be made into one though.

Check the size & length of the output shaft - may be different. Yes, the model number would help....

Is there a place on top for the WH style dipstick?? That extended length one will not fit under the WH hood.

Bumpout is where and what? The long tube is the oil dipstick hole?

Long tube is the dipstick and there will not be another hole for the WH style. That will not fit under the hood and there will be no way to block the hole except swapping oil pans.

The bump out is on the shroud where a starter would have been mounted.

Yes a more modern style starter engine can be made to be used as a starter /gen style. Just swap the flywheel and shroud over and install studs in place of head bolts for the gen bracket.

This 875 has an engine from a B-80

Buying an engine that you can't hear run is a huge gamble. Especially one that may not be an exact fit.

$60 is a good price but I always factor in my travel cost at 50 cent a mile. Unless I will be in the area for other reasons. That engine will have a hefty price tag all considered.

Right now the only engines and tractors I have seen that have sat for 20 or more years have the non e fuel. not a deal breaker but none the less a problem and more cost. :twocents-02cents:

Seller said 2 years not run for this engine. Someone once told me factory carburetors can sell for $150.00 on eBay? So could that alone make the carb if that’s all i wanted worth it?

@FLtractor WIWDIIWY…I’d pay the $60 and if you can’t get it running, part it out. You’ll get your money back, maybe ever make a little :)

It's your money have at it.

Maybe send them the 60 and have them ship the carb and air cleaner to you.

Lot of folks here that have tons of parts if you need any.
