FarmallFarmer09 6 #1 Posted Sunday at 04:56 PM Im going to restore my wheel horse Charger 12. Or at least thinking about it. I heard that Rust-Oleum IH red is a budget friendly close color to Wh original red. But what about the engine? i got to thinking, Doesent the engine get hot? What do i do about that? I found red caliper paint, But i dont think its going to be the same as the ih red. Wheres a good place to get decals? I was looking at "Restore your horse" At the decals , but they are incredibly expensive. Any tips?
rmaynard 16,369 #2 Posted Sunday at 05:02 PM Rust-Oleum Regal Red seems to be the choice of many Wheel Horse owners. As far as the engine, the only area that gets hot enough to discolor the paint is around the exhaust. Decals from redoyourhorse.com (our vendor Vinylguy), may be a little pricy, but they are good, and as far as I know, they may be your only source for some one of a kind decals like dash panels and engine spec plates.

Ya gets what ya paid for...... Rustoleum is a good "backyard" type of product - but - you need to wait about a month in order to apply the decals. It has a very slow cure time. Some folks buy the paint in quarts, mixing it with a hardening catalyst. That is best applied with a HVLP spraygun. Having bought several times from Vinylguy, I was never diaappointed.... 4
Brockport Bill 1,971 #4 Posted Sunday at 05:41 PM i use the 600 degree spray paint from auto stores on anything engine related
squonk 43,939 #5 Posted Sunday at 06:05 PM (edited) I spray just about everything with Rusty Regal Red. I have never sprayed it through a gun. My gun jobs have all been "Automotive paint. sometimes a single stage enamel and sometimes a basecoat/clearcoat mix. On the rattle can spray jobs, when I spray my last coat of color, I grab a can of rusty Chrystal Clear and immediately spray a coat of clear on the color. Then wait about 15 min then another coat of clear. Cuts the drying time by a ton. I spray engines the same way and they hold up well. The heads I use Duplicolor engine paint with a coat of clear the same way. As far as color goes, everyone sees red differently. some folks like Rusty Sunrise Red. But to me that looks too orangey especially under lights. Buy a can of each and spray a chunk of metal from something scrap and look at it under natural sunlight then decide what you like. FarmallFarmer09 6 #6 Posted Sunday at 09:34 PM Okay. So it seems like ill try and use rusty regal red. I plan on making sure i have the decals first before anything. The other question is, It needs a new dash plastic piece. Its all torn. What can i do about that. The other thing was is that its missing a headlight lens, I was just going to take a piece of plexiglass and slap a wheel horse logo on there. I know its not factory standard, But until i find one thats not $100, Ill replace it.

The lens isn't listed but he has them. Private message him. Edited Sunday at 10:14 PM by squonk

The engine cylinder cooling fins and head should only receive a single light coat of High heat paint. Paint is not good at transferring heat and you want the cooling fins to do their job.

TonyToro Jr. 1,993 #20 Posted Monday at 01:22 AM Your gonna need a few more then 4. It would probably be 4 just for the dozer blade and cart.

So how much would the tractor itself be. Maybe I can skip the blade or something.

MainelyWheelhorse 1,613 #25 Posted Monday at 04:50 PM I haven’t had a problem yet with Rust-Oleum IH red implement paint in my C- 141 Kohler K321 engine. It doesn’t seem to be burning off or discoloring yet. It seems to hold up well on the sheet metal too.
