2 axle seals per side???

Recommended Posts

Has anyone been told to replace to axle seals on the same side? I took off the axle seal on my 414-8 and called wheelhorse about ordering the proper seal. The lady on the phone said the kit they sell comes with 2 axle seals per side and I should replace them both. Anyone ever heard of this? I have seen videos of guys changing them and never seen them take two seals out.

There are four seals total on an 8-speed transmission. One axle seal per side. One brake drum seal. One input shaft seal.

I've never heard of such a thing and I've never seen a wheel horse transmission with two axle seals per side. Where are you dealing with? Can you get a part number?

FYI - if you look thru either the SKF or National Oil seal Catalog, sometimes there is a listing, by size, for either a single lip seal or a slightly wider double lip seal. I do not recall if 1-1/8" has both. Doesn't mean it's readily available either..... Got hosed on a similar part before. Just because it's listed does mean they actually make it......

You mean they ALWAYS have their hand out.... like an ex-wife!! Back in my days of designng custom Automation Equipment, I learned to pick my purchased items early in the project. A good supply vendor will work with you to find what you need / want. A not-so-good vendor will let you place the order, inform you that there are none on the shelf (true), none at the Manufacturer (semi true), then finally admit they are either no longer being made, or could be made with a minimum order of 144 or so... A waste of time.

You can use 2 seals per side  I would pack a little grease in between them to keep the outer one lubricated and reduce wear on the axle
