48 Inch Side Discharge Mower - Couple of Questions

Recommended Posts

hotajax

Deck from around the year 1985.  I broke off the zerk fitting on the top of the center spindle - yeah, the expensive one with two pullies.

Any suggs for good online dealers to get replacement spindle?  So far, only the zerk is shot - the bearings seem quiet.

Second question:   Any good online instruction for how to replace the entire bearing?  For those of you who have done this, is this an half-day affair?  What's the biggest issue - cutting through corrosion on the nuts on the bottom?

Any guidance greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

You should be able to get the remainder of the zerk fitting out of the spindle shaft with a small easy out. I've done that a couple times and no issues replacing. The spindles are pretty easy to rebuild and bearings are readily available on Amazon. Just have to remember to remove the dust cover that is going to face inside the spindle.

I usually paint the spindle housing with Por 15 or something similar since the housing is most susceptible to corrosion from the grass clippings.

If they're corroded so badly that they are missing attachment points, this set from 8-Ten will work except you will need to use the original deck pulleys.

I haven't rebuilt deck spindles myself, but getting the pulleys off the shafts can be a challenge.  A good soak with a penetrant for a few days is said to help.

This thread is my 42" deck rebuild and if you read through it you will see some fairly detailed pictures and explanation of the spindle rebuild.

This deck uses the same spindles as the 48".

Are the spindles just pressed on to a keyed shaft?  What tools do you use to life the pulleys so the flanges don't bend?  I'll probably soak the snot out of the shaft with Kroil or some Kimball Midwest Corrosion Blaster.  Both are great penetrant, although the Kimball stuff will give you a headache if you sniff it too long.
