'68 Commando 8 Mower Deck wheel replacement

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to find a cheaper route to fixing or replacing these without having to order the $60+ online.

See pic for the current state of the wheels...

K&B horse parts has the correct wheels for the rotary decks, I picked up a set at the Show.  He's in the vendor section, give him a call.

If you're truly trying to go cheap, you can find wheels on Ebay or Amazon for a lot less. They won't have the grease fitting, so you get what you pay for.

You can buy cheaper ones at Tractor Supply also if that's the way you want to go 😉

What specs do I need to check to make sure they're the right ones?

You'd want the type that has the offset hub.  Meaning, the hub on one side is out flush with the edge of the tire, and then you'd still most likely have to use washers to bring the wheel out far enough it won't rub on the shell of the deck. Just get the same diameter wheel.  I went that route at one time, "in a pinch" the bearings don't hold up well and there's not an easy way to keep them greased.

@ jr pedersen  , the commonality of those wheels is poor design and make up , the push in bearings don,nt help . its the size of wheel  type that makes for  failure , bigger is better , but still requires some  engineering  to make it last . also that  single inside mount point , does not support it well . a slide / trackless wheel will also , rotate  yet slide to any  side deflection , that  dig in point , starts the entire failure  again and again . thinking a swivel mount bolt on . pete

Thanks Pete...it would be nice to be able to buy a larger rubber wheel that would fit over the original one...

although wouldn't a larger tire cause issues if you want to adjust the deck to cut the grass lower?

I'm checking them out now through your link - Thanks.

I was wondering if those swivel wheels would work...

@JR Pedersen  that was my intent , looking at selection , most important  is wheel rotation start  and  angular  slide , side area , to prevent hang ups. always looking for  an improvement area , you can always paint it red , and make it disappear. when swivels work correctly  , they  do it with total ease , they would also mount on outer  edge deck  corners .  glad you are on it, that axel swing point  has to be greasable , to enhance  swivel , when correct , its seamless . giving you the ok to experiment , pete
