mrc 952 #1 Posted Monday at 06:12 PM hello all, servicing my late buddies wh tractor for his widow. the tranny drain plug would not budge. i tried welding a nut onto the drain plug, no luck with that idea. next i drilled thru the drain plug with my Milwaukee hole hawg drill. i kept going up in size till i could just see some tranny case threads. next i tried an easy out from my matco extractor kit. no luck there either. tomorrow i'm thinking VERY carefully with a dremel remove some more material from the remnants of the drain plug. then tap with a NPT tap. question is what size NPT tap? i'm thinking 1/4x18 NPT tap? then get a new drain plug from the local parts store. any suggestions welcome regards mike
ri702bill 9,411 #2 Posted Monday at 06:54 PM (edited) Mike - sometimes this works.... use a left-handed drill bit the size of the tap drill. The reverse rotation & thin wall just might do it. But it has to be dead on center..... If it is a 1/4 NPT thread, the tap drill is 7/16" Edited Monday at 06:55 PM by ri702bill
mrc 952 #3 Posted Monday at 10:21 PM thank you bill for the idea. unfortunately i must be a bit off center because i can see some tranny case threads on one side of the hole. the other side still has remnants of the the drain plug.
mrc 952 #4 Posted 19 hours ago bill, the drain plugs are 1/8x27 NPT size. luckily i had a tap that size. closer inspection revealed i was pretty well centered when drilling. the threads in the tranny case had a couple of flute marks from the drill bit but, none too deep. i tapped the hole. installed a new drain plug with some pipe dope on it and no leaks. after that i finished changing the tranny oil and filter. dodged a bullet on this one for sure. regards mike
