Gerry w 2 #1 Posted September 20, 2009 Things are getting cooler in Northern Vermont, and I'm thinking snow with Pat's Blower and Scott's blade about to trip on down to PA. for me,so with a bunch of parts chains from Thirdroc(Dale) my son and I put together a two link set with v-bars yesterday, think this will do the trick, in or on almost anything! Sparky-(Admin) 23,130 #2 Posted September 20, 2009 Lookin good Gerry! Is the D getting the blower? If so how much weight are you putting on it? I had over 100#'s on each rear wheel on my D with a snowblade. Mike..........
dgoyette 12 #3 Posted September 20, 2009 Looks good Gerry. Ditto to the question on if you are going to mount the blower or the plow. Is the blower complete? I may be thinking in error but did you say you have a cab that may fit the D?
Gerry w 2 #4 Posted September 20, 2009 I have a cab that I used on the Raider last year that I made fit, I believe it will fit.. Going to use the front blade first, then when the ground is frozen switch to the blower. Pat has really made the blower look great, shame to use it as he does really good work! Scott and Pat and Nick have me thinking if I set up a seven gallon with concrete, add in a hitch to pull the wood wagon etc, that with the rear weights on it now should work. Do you folks agree?? I do not want to add too much weight as WH500 has stated that the rear end is the weak link on these beast Thanks for your input and advice. Gerry
dgoyette 12 #5 Posted September 20, 2009 I think you will be fine with the Wheel weights and the chains. That machine is very heavy! and the blower frame is pretty long so the weight of it is better distributed to the tractor IMO. Unlike other set ups that hook very close to the front and hang all the weight off the front. Good think too those D blowers are heavy! The hydro is pretty strong but I think it is generally accepted that the D is pushing the upper limits of its capabilities. I really don't think you will harm it by adding rear ballast if you want. When I was using the FEL to move gravel I had 300 lbs in the ballast box and loaded tires. Not sure it would hold up to prolonged use like that or not. bitten 134 #9 Posted September 21, 2009 Gary: That is a nice looking D you have. I would start out with the chains and wheel weights and see what that does. Just add more if it needs it. I have fluid in my D tires( they came that way) and only use chains and it is a monster in the snow. I have a blower for it and have never used it, I have a gravel drive way and use the 56" blade. Last winter when we had 12" of snow my neighbor and I cleaned the neighborhood. He has a snow blower on a big cub and there was only 1 time that I had to let him make a pass before I could get thru. The blade set up is so much faster then the blower, I was running circules around him. Hope my expierance and 2 cents helps you, P.J.
bell 11 #10 Posted September 21, 2009 Gerry, NICE job on the chains!!! those should work GREAT! I have a set of 6-12 "v-bar" chains and traction is AMAZING with them mounted up! :scratchead:

I'm going to try the plow first, I've got legdepak on the drive way and it's long and up a hill, we will see. I'm thinking I've also got a triangluar hitch that I could place the extra wheel weights on instead of the bucket?? My wheels arn't weighted... Thanks for the info, quicker then a blower eh?? dgoyette 12 #12 Posted September 21, 2009 I think whether a plow or blower is quicker depends on the area. My driveway is actually quicker with a blower because I have two areas where I need to push the bulk of the snow. I have to touch most of it more than once and then end up with huge banks that keep creeping forward. I had a Jeep with a 6 foot plow a few years ago and even with that a 48 inch blower is still quicker. Touch it once and it's gone forever. Now that is just mine. If it was smaller and a straight shot no doubt a blade would be quicker. Of course this year the c-160 will be doing some plowing just so I can get to try the d with FEL out. It's going to be the best winter for the fun factor. Hate to think I am looking forward to it - lord help me.
Gerry w 2 #13 Posted September 21, 2009 Darren, Do you have chains for your D? And I'm with you on the blower and touch it once, plus, I'm betting it will fly forever with the D!
dgoyette 12 #14 Posted September 21, 2009 Gerry, No I do not have chains yet. I was looking at a set at TireChains.com for $64 for 2 link spacing which seems like a good deal for 26x12. Especially with a pretty reasonable $12.99 shipping. I thought about v bar but not sure I want that biting into my new shed floor. But I bet the traction would be awesome. I think I will have to get the chains to move use the D. I think I could get down the hill in my driveway with the Turfs but pretty sure I would not get back up. Gerry w 2 #15 Posted September 22, 2009 with your driveway I would get the bars....they will be needed!
GlenPettit 1,717 #16 Posted September 22, 2009 The V-bars give a lot more traction on gravel, but if ever wheels/chains spin, they will tear into concrete. When you're backing into the shed, you are probably going slow, and it's a good idea to drive onto a wood plank, as the chains will always drip rust and stain the concrete, and rust is hard to get out. Great price for 2-link Chains and reasonable shipping. When mounting chains; deflate the tires some, mount, and you can use rubber bungies/S-hooks on the inside to tighten (or 1/4" bolts)
