1999 Lift-a-Loft scissor lift electrical help?

Recommended Posts

I've been helping my son-in-law on his farm, most recently helping him rebuild the roof on his barn after a wind storm flattened the roof.

He purchased an old scissor lift that has been hacked badly, electrically.  We have spent many hours replacing bad wires and connections, re-ran the electric fuel pump, and are now chasing charging & starter bugs.

The following are alternator photos & diagram.  It's a 3-wire alternator, a YB-85A.  (Link to PDF below )

What confuses me is that there is a direct connection (via the ammeter & then starter solenoid) to the battery, hot even with the switch off.  That's the white wire connected to "pos" )

The connection marked reg only connects internally to the VR, and the exciter wire (white connected to orange) connects to the coil.

I get generated 14.5 V from the "reg" connector.  Steady 12.5 V from the " pos" connector on or off.

NEVER get 14 V across the battery.

Do I just run a 10 GA wire (it's a 30 amp alt) from the "reg" to the bat?  The connections seem accurate to me, just no charge via to "pos" terminal.

Thanks a million in advance!

I would say yes hook it to the battery. They are likely relying on the diodes in the alternator to prevent currant flow in the opposite direction when turned off. Some of our tractors are wired that way.

Some regulators need to see battery voltage before they will work but the field wire from the ignition switch should get it charging.

If you are leery of it add a relay to make the battery connection and control it with the ignition feed.
