Jason X 20 #1 Posted July 20 My '72 raider10-8 started shifting hard. Now it only goes into reverse (and hard at that). Where do I start? Shifter is firmly in place. Clutch engages/disengages. Whats next?

Jason X 20 #3 Posted July 20 Yes. Was using to blow snow. Literally froze up in the cold weather. Sucked it all out. Was about a quart of water from 25 years of sitting. Refilled with 80/90. Drove well for 2 years but I looked today and though looking like good oil it was low. About half. Filled. Still no shift. Might have to pull apart. IDK. wallfish 18,097 #4 Posted July 20 Pull that shifter out and take a look inside there at the shift forks.
SylvanLakeWH 28,400 #5 Posted July 20 Start easy. See if shifter has jumped out... Also - Half full indicates a leak... Any drips under it? check axle seals...

Jason X 20 #7 Posted July 21 Negative on the leak. Just didn't fill it enough the first time I messed with it. Will pull that shifter and give her a look.

I would avoid forcing the shifter back and forth. You can absolutely break the end off of it, and the end that would break off is large enough to bind the bull gear against the case. That will break some stuff... The shifter rails sit high in the case, so low oil can definitely lead to some rust on them. If after removing the shifter and using a screwdriver or similar doesn't break them loose, it's probably time to split it and clean things up.
