77 C-160 wont crank

Recommended Posts

Moohampshire

Totally rebuilt a 77 C-160.  New battery and when I turn ignition to first spot lights work.  When I turn to crank the engine-nothing.  Thought it was a bad ignition switch so I got a new one.  Same thing.  I have power to both sides of the solenoid.  Engine turns over by hand.  When key is turned to start engine I hear nothing from starter.  Issue has to be electrical

Any help will be greatly appreciated

" Power on both sides of solenoid" I'm assuming you hear a click from the solenoid when in the start position. If so, could be a  bad starter but "cents" you restored the tractor I'm betting you painted the engine and where the starter bolts on and the ground cable connects, you need to clean off the paint  at these locations to establish grounds.

The PTO lever switch comes to mind, too.  I think it is wired between the key switch and the starter solonoid.

If you have power going to the starter the solenoid has closed. Power in both large cables.

It is either stuck there requiring solenoid replacement or the wiring is OK and the starter motor has failed to run. Maybe the starter is not properly grounded as already noted.

Bad ground is my first thought too.

I bet you painter it all the way!           May have painted everything to the point that an electrical ground sufficient to handle the starter load can't be made.   Run your ground cable to the engine block mounting point for the starter.

Thanks for all the great ideas as I will go through all of them today and see what I get.  Also thanks for the electrical diagrams.
