416H OIL WARNING FLICKERS

Recommended Posts

My 416H oil indicator light flickers at idle. What is a normal oil pressure range for the 16 hp Onan?  Are the oil sensors available if defective?

You can buy switches at auto parts stores.  You need a switch that turns on a contact when there is pressure to power the hour meter and another contact that turns on when there is no pressure to turn on the oil light.  Normal oil pressure is 8 psi at 1500 rpm and the bypass valve limits maximum psi to 20.  The oil pressure switch should shift at approximately 2 to 4 psi.  You should determine the current psi of your engine using a gauge, if it is below 8 at 1500 rpm it is rebuild time.  You can remove the oil pressure switch and install a line to a gauge (not easy).  Of course all of this depends on having the correct viscosity oil.

I would swap out the switch. If for no other reason you'll know your engine is making good oil pressure.

Those switches are normally closed (one side to ground), and the pressure holds them open. My Vanguard engine uses the same setup but goes directly to the ignition mag so the engine won't fire unless it reaches the minimum (5 psi) oil pressure. I think on the Onan the switch completes the circuit for the oil indicator lamp so it is off when minimum pressure is reached.

In short: either the switch is going bad or you aren't making good oil pressure. Replacing the switch will verify which is which.
