Teddy da Bear62 95 #1 Posted June 21 Many might have read in another post that my c-160 auto went up in flames.... It really wasn't as bad as that. I think she will be ready to rock when I replace battery, gas line and starter. I believe the starter to be the ignition source of the fire. Gasoline residue was ignited by sparks from starter going bad. I took starter off my old B-80. However, it is a high-side mount. The C-160 is a low side mount. Question: The starter housing is merely a tube. Is it possible to flip the guts inside and make it the correct orientation?

Yes, provided the housings are otherwise identical. The bendix gears also must be swapped. They have a different tooth count. The problem will be getting the brushes in place when swapping.

I was doing a Briggs starter so the application may not be the same. Taryl Fixes all has a video about it on YouTube.

Teddy da Bear62 95 #5 Posted June 21 Ok guys and Gals.... I don't think it's possible to swap ends.... 😢 I took apart the defunct starter. Actually part of the magnet applied to the inside of the tube had "chunked" off. The magnet is closer to one end of the tube than the other end. It's not symmetrical. Please note the difference in photos. The armature rides directly over the magnet and when energized forces the teeth to engage. If it no longer rides directly over the magnet? I'm not sure what results would be? Might be weak. I think I'm going to rob Peter to pay Paul and take starter off other C-160. Order a DB Electric starter to replace one taken.
