I don't fully understand this sir.  Can you elaborate.  Wondering if that is why the ring  I put on did not stay put??

The 2 grooves have different inner diameters and width. An E ring that is sprung open will not seat and could fall off. It can be closed a bit with pliers. Once it is installed it should not be able to spin in the groove freely... same goes for the full circle type.

When snap rings and E-rings are made they are stamped so one side has rounded edges and the other side has sharp edges.

This one should be installed with the round side down and the sharp edge up. Harder for the ring to jump the groove when pressure is applied.
