JohnnyMac 43 #1 Posted May 24 (edited) Hello again, I had someone reply to my wanted ad with an offer on an 89 310-8. Tractor with mower deck, plow, lawn aerator, chains, utility trailer. Always garaged- one owner bought new in 1989. Runs great! $500.00 He was even going to deliver it, but has since rescinded that offer. It's not exactly what I was looking for, but figured it might be good for leaving outside in my temporary garage this winter to clear my driveway. I see some surface rust on the tractor. I really don't need the utility tractor or the lawn aerator, but am interested in the plow and the mower deck looks clean. I figure the plow is worth $100/$150. Thoughts on this tractor? I'm off to see it Monday. Thank you. Edited May 24 by JohnnyMac added content
JCM 10,226 #2 Posted May 24 Great all around tractor. Well worth the $$$$$, sell what you don't need. If it checks out okay buy it before someone else beats you to it. Good Luck 8

CCW 1,379 #4 Posted May 24 My 312-8 is a great tractor. Has done nearly everything I have asked it to do and the only thing it didn't do was my fault. This one looks like it is in good condition. As said above. Run it and try it.
adsm08 3,267 #5 Posted May 24 I'd buy running 310-8s for $500 all day long.

MainelyWheelhorse 1,527 #9 Posted May 25 That looks in pretty good shape for 500 the attachments are just icing on the cake. None of mine were in that nice of shape when I got them. You lucked out.
Brockport Bill 1,953 #10 Posted May 25 markets and price varies by state, and certainly season -- but that mower deck in the Hudson River Valley - if no rust holes - all pulleys and spindles spin well, the spindle housings are good condition, tires ok, etc --- then it self is a $300 value itself excluding the tractor and plow etc
Brockport Bill 1,953 #11 Posted May 25 fyi - i sold this 36 r.d. ( see photo ) by itself 2 yrs ago for $350 - - thus, the $500 for a running 310 tractor - plus mower deck, and plow, etc would suggest is a solid value.
kpinnc 14,652 #12 Posted May 25 A 310-8 in good shape will easily carry a 42 inch deck. I used mine as my primary mower and tiller for many years. Good luck with the purchase. Even a decent 310-8 is a good investment.

We mowed and tilled with a 310-8 that my dad bought new in 88 until a few years after I moved out in 2010. 2 acre yard with a large garden. In all those years, and probably thousands and thousands of hours of run time all that tractor ever took aside from regular servicing and belts was a fuel pump and a carb rebuild in the late 90s. It only got "replaced" (it's still there, it just doesn't get used as much) after I moved out because mom didn't like the seat, which is still original and really needs replaced.

JohnnyMac 43 #15 Posted May 25 Thank you all for your replies! I go to see it tomorrow, well if the seller gets back to me with the directions. The first deal, prior to him posting, was he would deliver it, of course after posting it and getting whatever inquires after our deal, he is now unable to deliver it. Imagine that.... That kind of pissed me off. Anyways... I see the seat pan is pretty rusty. I'd imagine I should be able find one someday from someone selling parts. Think around $50, or am I way off here? I did a quick search and don't see much here in NH.
JCM 10,226 #16 Posted May 25 (edited) Around Maine and New Hampshire check out tractor supply. Make sure you measure the bolt pattern on whatever you buy for a WH that it will fit. Doesn't sound like you can really trust this guy to me. Personally I would keep looking. Sounds like a jerk. Edited May 25 by JCM
JCM 10,226 #17 Posted May 25 Both 312-8 and 310 -8 are great tractors with little fuel consumption.

I did a quick search and don't see much here in NH. as an option to looking for used seat pan to buy --- a seat pan can easliy be rehabbed yourself -- you can go the higher level rehab and have it sandblasted to remove all the rust and create even quality surface - then prime and paint with spray can Rustoleum ---- OR just use 90 degree grinder sander disc - or other sanding, or manually - then prime and paint many other members here can offer suggestions or from those with more professional restorer skills - the degree to "perfect" you want is your choice and of course related to how the rest of the tractor looks or you want to rehab/restore ??????????

JohnnyMac 43 #21 Posted May 25 (edited) It looks to me as if there is a leak under the left rear of this tractor? I will of course look underneath to find the source, if there actually is one. Should I be worried If coming from the transmission? Edited May 25 by JohnnyMac wanted to add content.
pfrederi 18,690 #22 Posted May 25 Probably an axle seal or Brake shaft seal. Neither one are all that difficult to fix.
Wayne0 1,205 #23 Posted May 25 Honestly, BUY IT! Figure a couple hundred for the stuff you don't want, makes the price a no brainer.
