Achto 29,351 #1 Posted May 23 I wanted a little better coverage with my Brinly cultivator so I added some 6" sweeps to it. They work well in clean ground but I'm having issue with it plugging if there is field trash. My thoughts are that they are now too close together and the trash can not slide through. Thinking of cutting the sides down so that they are 4" instead of 6" wide. Also may cut the tops down so that they contact the ground at more of an angle. Worse comes to worse I may just have to take them off I guess. Any one have any advise, my ears are open. Thanks.
Ed Kennell 41,775 #2 Posted May 23 You could remove the center one on each side or replace it with a skinny one. 2
SylvanLakeWH 28,311 #3 Posted May 23 No idea if this makes sense... Add a disc between each sweep? Pizza cutter action would dig , roll and slice field trash allowing it to pass through...? Just trying to revolutionize agriculture. 1
953 nut 59,741 #4 Posted May 23 I know this is something you don't enjoy doing and would probably seem repulsive to you but if you were to plow the area first those big teeth would chew the freshly rolled dirt quite well. 1 1
Goldnboy 1,027 #5 Posted May 24 When i used to farm with full size implements. If a field cultivator would plug with trash that meant that you needed to disc the ground more to chop up the trash. Some would use a flair cutter on the ground similar to a flail mower or the bluebird dethatcher that had flail knives to beat up the stalks instead of discing the ground. However nowadays everyone has gone to no till/ min til and they drop the headers of the combines all the way down when picking up the crops the result is more crop residue is chopped up during harvest than the older smaller combines did and farmers had less tillage to do in fall and winter. 1
Achto 29,351 #6 Posted May 24 I decided to get my trusty 4 1/2" grinder out to cut the sweeps down. I took 1/2" off from each side, making them each 5" wide. This gave me a small gap between each sweep instead of a slight over lap. Seems to work much better now. I took the center and the front 2 shanks off & did a few rows of sweet corn this morning. This configuration worked out great for the corn. Only have to straddle every other row to get a clean result. With my older Brinly cultivator that has narrow sweeps, I would always have to straddle every row. Time & fuel saving. With all 7 shanks installed I can cover a 42" path, which my 953 has no trouble pulling. 2
