520 h high voltage

I don't sign in very often but this my goto place for everything Wheel Horse.  I've got one now that I can't figure out.  I was mowing and all of the indicator lights on the dash came on.  I looked down and the volt meter was pegged to the right.  I checked the voltage and was getting about 31 volts from the alternator and about 21 on B+ to the negative terminal of the battery.  I suspected bad voltage regulator and purchased a new one.  I installed it but still have the same problem.  Does anyone have any idea of what may be going on?  I can still mow with one of my others but this one is my favorite.  My 42" rear discharge deck is about as wide as the tractor and I can mow the ditch in front of my house without much trouble.  Thanks in advance for any help.

You can receive defective parts, new.  I don't know how the knowledgeable folks here feel, but in the motorcycle world, converting to a Shindengen Mosfet regulator is a valuable upgrade. They work with 2 wire (single phase) and 3 wire (3 phase) stators.

Beat me by 2 seconds.  Also check engine and battery grounds.

I would think the new VR could be bad but it's doing exactly the same thing as the one that I took off.  I checked case to battery ground and found no resistance.  I checked stator to ground and found no short.  It really doesn't make sense.  I'm pretty sure it's a half wave bridge so the voltage out should be no more that half of the voltage in.  I'm at a loss.  I may pull a VR from one of my other tractors that I know is good and try that tomorrow.

Download the Onan Service Manual the information you need starts at page 8-4.  It well may be that you have two bad voltage regulators, I have had good luck with the cheap ones on the auction site but it may be just a matter of luck.

When you guys right, you're right.  Pulled a VR from one of my other tractors that I knew worked and everything fell into place.  A big thanks to everyone for their help.

If you have a local small engine shop that sells used parts buy a couple of used VR's off Kawasaki FH series engines.  The last two 416H's I picked up had bad VR's.  I made an adapter plate from some aluminum to mount them on my Onans.  Working great so far.  OEM quality as well.
