Moohampshire 11 #1 Posted May 16 I have a 77 C-160 and both rear axle seals are leaking and need replacement. How do you get the old ones out? Thanks
Gasaholic 304 #2 Posted May 16 drill a small 1/16 hole and drive in a self tapping screw (#6 or so should do) and use that with a pair of pliers to pop the seal out , once you get it out a bit far enough can use a screwdriver driven in the sides to pry the rest of the way out.. I've also sharpened the end of an old flat screwdriver and hammer it in between the seal and the case housing (risky though , needs care to not damage the housing just enough to fit a thicker screwdriver in and collapse that side of the seal inwards to loosen the seal all around and it comes out easier. there's also actual seal pullers you can buy to do the job.

ri702bill 9,534 #4 Posted May 16 There are numerous do's & don't postings regarding removal & proper installation - IF the bearing has up & down or front to back play, it is bad and the new seal will become it's second victim...
Moohampshire 11 #5 Posted May 16 The bearings is tight but leaking tranny fluid. Where I am rebuilding the entire tractor I want to fix all that is wrong with it. Thanks for your help.
JimSraj 515 #6 Posted May 17 Before you get to putting the new seals in be sure to clean up any burrs around the key way and then put a layer of tape over it to protect the inner part of the seal as you slide it on.
kpinnc 14,713 #7 Posted May 17 An o-ring pick set is helpful as well, and usually inexpensive. Be very careful how deep you drill or run the screw if you use that method. You can very easily damage the bearing since it is right behind the seal. 1
