What's the symptoms?

I'll be following with interest and maybe you and I helping each other...

BBT and I have to pop the starter off the Workhorse GT1800 in our shop this week.

See if you can hear the noise when I turn the armature shaft. I thing it needs a rebuild.

Made a terrible noise cranking for a few cranks… Then got to where it wouldn’t do anything when trying to start.

How do I check condition of internals if I take these 2 screws loose and take out the armature ?

Does a worn out starter look a certain way way inside ?

I haven't had a Briggs starter apart yet. Only Kohlers.

Likely there'll be clear indications of wear and tear.

Just did. First thing I noticed was the brushes pop out of their slots. Second thing I noticed is the two positive brushes are opposite each other and same with the negative brushes.

How do the bearings feel? Does the armature have any burned or pitted spots?

@Achto,

I guess when you said bearings you meant bushings?

True.

Armature looks a little ruff, but not terrible. The grooves in it could use a good cleaning for sure.

How do you clean the internal parts ?(ex. Armature, washers, spring washers, armature shaft)

Small brass brush, gently ?

Any solvent like carb or brake cleaner ?

I posted a pic above that shows the brushes. Do they look too short ?

Of course while I in there will replace…

I’m no expert on this but I think a little dry graphite might be a good thing on the bushings during reassembly. You don’t want any type of oily material because it will only trap dirt and dust. I’m following along in regards to the proper cleaning process.

Two things jump out at me - looks like worn copper has gotten into the slots that deperate the commutator segments and are shorting out the adjacent set. those must be kept seperate. Remenber the positive & negative part?? What you have there is a dead spot... Turn (spin) the armature to be able to clean the copper surfaces where the brushes ride first..

Polish the shaft areas where the bushings are...

Do you mean the short grooves across the long things or in between the long things, or both ?

The end that the brushes run on is the armature. The grooves on this should be cleaned out. An Exacto knife or a hack saw blade will work for this.

Came home today to continue working on the starter for the GT-1600 Twin Briggs.

Found a broken magnet. Smooth across the crack…

How serious is this ?

Any advice ?
