1968Commando 128 #1 Posted April 30 Hey yall, I rebuilt a Kholer k181 engine awhile back and I replaced the starter gen belt last spring and it worked fine once I got it adjusted and tensioned right but now that same belt will either get stuck on the compression stroke and not spin at all and actully the starter gen pulley will just spin and not the actual motor will spin or I turn the key and nothing moves at all, OR it will spin slowly, can somebody help me either guide me to the right belt size or help me truble shoot the engine is off the tractor as I am putting it back together right now but I should have everything wired up next week Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
ri702bill 9,067 #2 Posted April 30 Right Church, wrong pew, as they say. The issue is the S/G itself. May be poor ground, worn brushes, springs or Commutator. Perhaps a bad bearing or bushing. Possibly a not fully charged battery too... 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Well that’s the thing it seemed to work with no belt slip until I rebuilt the motor and now it struggles is this because maybe the belt is worn out although I don’t know how it’s only a year old and maybe the starter gen is too week for the rebuilt motor I actually have a rebuild kit I got from I save tractors I just haven’t installed it yet 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

squonk 42,810 #9 Posted April 30 Did you paint the engine? It takes 60-70 amps to get the starter rolling. The generator grounds through the mounting brackets. If you painted the block the mounting surface for the brackets need to be sanded shiny. No paint. You lose a lot of current wit bad connections. I haven’t painted the block but I am tonight so I will just leave the starter bracket attached, I have added a solenoid to this as originally it had a 3 post switch I will check all this stuff this weekend as I plan to start re wiring this weekend I rebuilt the motor and then hooked everything back up to make sure the motor ran and it did but it had the issues with the starter gen as I said so when I reword I’ll pay close attention to the connections Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,280 #13 Posted May 1 I always wire brush to bare and clean both ends of the field coils where they meet the end plates and do the end plates as well. At least one end of that assembly uses these clean contact areas for a ground. This applies to starter motors and automotive alternators also. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
