Don in Mystic 7 #1 Posted April 25 I have a 1974 C-100. I recently relined the brake band with a new lining from Ebay. I used a high temp adhesive to attach it. The brakes work great when traveling forward but I have nothing in reverse. I skipped deglazing the "drum" but considering the brakes function perfectly in Fwd I doubt that's the problem. Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
rmaynard 16,372 #2 Posted April 25 So, there are two of us who sell brake linings on eBay. I can't speak for the other seller, but if you bought it from me, I can tell you that you probably just need to adjust your brake according to the manual. Of the thousands of linings sold, I have never heard of a reverse stopping issue. Try re-adjusting and let us know.
pfrederi 18,714 #3 Posted April 25 The band brakes used on wheel horses are self energizing going forward. not so in reverse... so reverse braking will always be a bit weaker than forward.
squonk 43,940 #4 Posted April 25 Paul is correct. Looking at the drum, it spins clockwise going forward. The band is tightened from the bottom and the drum surface is "forced" into the lining. In reverse the drum spins counter clockwise and is spinning away from the clamping force of the band 1
ri702bill 9,534 #5 Posted April 25 One other thing you may try - remove the brake band to give access to the brake drum. Scuff up the OD with 80 grit sandpaper. One creative person did this with a belt sander!! This will give a rougher surface for the lining to "bite" into...
Ed Kennell 42,179 #6 Posted April 25 If Paul and Mike's theory is valid, My brakes should work best in reverse.

The forces acting on the wheel and brake are depicted by the arrows. where they meet is the most force. "self energizing"

Don in Mystic 7 #10 Posted May 16 I have brakes! I removed the band and deglazed the drum with a 4" high speed sander. Then set the brakes to factory specs and they work again. Thank you all for your advice.
