Where are the lights grounded on a 520H and is there an in line fuse for the lights?

There is a 10 amp fuse on the light circuit.

The lights are usually grounded through the hood, which is somewhat crap. Most of us install a ground jumper between the frame and hood for this reason. This is especially important if using LEDs, as a bad ground will make them flicker.

And I highly recommend LEDs. Just search "PAR36 LED" and you'll find dozens of options. Far more brightness, lower current draw, and they last forever.

And while I can't speak for everyone, I usually wire my headlights direct to the hot side of the starter solenoid through a switch and inline fuse holder.

And BTW Welcome to the sickness from another NC member!

Fuses can be in several locations on a 520H depending on year.  The most common have a fuse block on the right side near the battery, the 15 amp fuse there is for the lights.

You might have a ground wire from the headlights to the engine.  The positive runs across the engine and is plugged into the chassis wiring harness.

My Model no. is 4120OE01  13324.  Would this identify the year model?

That would be a 1990 year.

The real first question in any eletrical diagnosis is "Are you missing power, or ground." And if the answer is neither then the component is bad.
