bowtiebuster 0 #1 Posted September 13, 2009 Ok, well as I took began tearing into my Kohler 10 today to clean it up and give it a once over, I broke a head bolt nearest the exhaust. It snapped just about a mill above the deck height. Attached is a pic of it. What do you guys think? Has anyone else even snapped a bolt like this? Is it possible to drill out successfully? Any info or insight into this depressing road block would be great! Nicholas Attached Image
Gene_S 93 #2 Posted September 13, 2009 Nicholas, What I have done in the past was set the motor up on a bridgeport mill and center up as good as possible and drill it out. Then I would heli-coil the threads. Gota be as close as possible to center, use a short #3 center drill first. Most small engine shops will do this for a fee. Good luck! It is fixable! Thanks, Gene
bowtieguy 334 #3 Posted September 14, 2009 Put a slightly larger nut over the stud...arc weld the stud to the inside of the nut.....when it cools off, you should be able to put a wrench on the nut and take it out....good luck.... :scratchead:
bowtiebuster 0 #4 Posted September 14, 2009 Thanks for the input guys. I dug into it today with drills and a tap. After probably over well over an hour of drilling from smaller to larger bits, and constantly needing to sharpen the bits, I got most of the bolt out and re-tapped it to the original size. After I finished tapping, I put the motor back together and put it back on the Raider. The reason I took the motor off was because I thought it had no compression... At that time I didn't know about the ACR system and how it works... At least it gave me a chance to get to know a Kohler and clean it up a bit. lol Thanks again, Nicholas Attached Image
