homemade hitch ?

Recommended Posts

i had to pull this off to get the plow hitch to bolt up. someone did a nice job on building this hitch. heck it looks like something from the factory. its even WH red  .

instead of the normal solid hitch pin, this had 3 sections of pin with the centers drilled out and the small pin going threw the center of them all. i was scratching my head while taking this off  . all i could see was the small pin. luckly everything came out ok.

That's kind of cool. They made it so it actually pulls on the frame, not just the rear.

Looks like a good setup...never seen one made that way.

But you think about it...it would remove a lot of the stress of the back of the trans no matter what Wheel Horse hitch is used.

I always thought the flat tab hitch was to low for pulling heavy trailer...the slot is better "higher" put will fold under when backing up with a heavy load unless it's hard mounted & both carry all the weight at the back of the trans.

You may have stumbled onto something here Perry...one of those with a 2" receiver blank on it would be the berries!

That looks like a well thought out and strong hitch Perry

I might have to make a copy (faked in England as the saying goes :P ) for my 312-8 as it gets lots of abuse with heavy trailers  :D

Perry,

It looks like it's a well thought out design.

It could be easily made if someone wants to copied it. And since Perry already has one he could take dimensions of it and pass that info on to anyone who wants to make one.

I'd be one that could use a hitch like it. Yep, you add a 2" receiver to that and it would be golden for me.

I pull my 2600# 16' travel trailer from the back yard to the driveway with my 953. I like this setup much better then what I'm runnin now. I may just have to look into building one for myself.

Thanks for sharing. Mich60

It wouldn't be much better for a trailer with a lot of tongue weight though. Most of the pressure is still on the rear of the transaxle at the original hitch mounting location.

The two smaller welded-on tabs at the rear mount should also be a one-piece "U" shaped bracket that is welded under the drawbar to help support the weight. I'd also recommend using the standard 3/4" pin at the rear mount.

yes terry you are on the right track. the slot hitch ears are bent and i cant use it with the factory solid pin. with the set-up they had, the bushing running threw the center should've been one piece. being it is 3 piece made it weak. a nice U shape bracket and the solid pin would make it sweet.

I also wanted to mention a "fix" for the slot hitch "kicking up" when backing a heavy trailer........

Somewhere in my collection of stuff I have a drawbar that fits snugly in the slot and has a 90 degree bend about one inch from the one end. To insall the drawbar, you have to unhook the lift cable from the hitch and let it drop down so the drawbar can be inserted from the back side. (With the bent end of the drawbar facing up) It has two different holes drilled for the "keeper" pin. One lets you slide it out the whole way so the hitch will still raise normally, and the other hole places the bent "lip" of the drawbar very close to the transaxle case so the hitch can't kick up.

Since I know I can't find the real one, I did a quick "drawing" of it so y'all could see:

I have one of these in my parts box with all the slot hitch  parts I've got over the years.

Terry is it a factory peice or just something you have seen built up that works?

Of course I never thought about putting it in from the backside either.

It could be a hoemade peice Terry?

But it looks like a copy of your picture.

I have a "standard" flat drawbar in the slot hitch on my 1056 that is similar, but the end isn't bent.

Maybe there were a lot of WH owners that had the same good idea -- and quite a few of these were built in sheds and garages over the years.

Probably a mod like your thinking TT.

It's not bent..but a peice the same size as the flat stock is cut & welded to it...very well done too.

I'll try & find it  & get a pic up?

I guess great minds think alike....or weak minds think better in the company of Wheel Horses.

Wow.... it's sort of heavy-duty, I suppose. The bad thing is that all of the stress is on those 2 "U" bolts and they would load the axle housings pretty bad if there was much tongue weight. (and you could do some  wheelies!)

That would be an excellent set-up if it was a little closer to the axle centerline and had some diagonal braces up to the top of the transaxle.
