slantram 9 #1 Posted September 12, 2009 I have a C-81 with a 12 Hp Kohler(someone swapped out the 8Hp before I bought it.)The charging system barely worked when I got it so I took off the Reg/Rect and cleaned everything up and ran a ground wire direct from the Reg/Rect to the battery ground cable and everything works fine now.I have a reading of mid 14 volts at full throttle. Back in the `70s I had a Tecumseh 7 Hp on a Toro rider with a 10 Amp charging system. When the Reg/Rect went bad on that rider I took a new style Kohler Rec/Rect (the small one) and plugged it in and mounted it with a good ground and ran it for another 5/6 years with no problems at all. It always kept the battery at full charge without overcharging it. My question is, can I do the same thing with my 12 Hp Kohler when the original large Reg/Rect gives out? Just replace it with the new style small 15 Amp Reg/Rect. Anyone done this before? Thanks, slantram.
Save Old Iron 1,571 #2 Posted September 12, 2009 If the regulator assembly is rated for the same or more amperage as the stator is rated at - and it physically fits in the original location - your all set. The 14 volt output is set and maintained by electronics inside the rect / regulator assembly .
