1961551 2 #1 Posted September 11, 2009 HI, I AM NEW HERE AND NOT A TYPER. BUT I WILL TRY. I AM RESTORING A 551 FOR MY SON. IT IS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL. BUT HAS SET FOR 40+ YEARS AND ENGINE WAS LOCKED UP. THE ONLY PART MISSING WAS THE ENGINE RECOIL COVER, WHICH IS WHAT I NEED TO IDENTIFY ENGINE. NO ENGINE TAG. IT APPEARS TO BE A TECUMSEH. LAUSON? MAYBE ONE OF YOU CAN HELP. I HAVE ENGINE APART. WHAT I DO KNOW IS... IT HAS A STEEL SLEEVE. CYLINDER BORE IS 2.628 INCHES IT HAS AN OIL PUMP. IT HAS A 3/4 CRANKSHAFT OUTLET. IT IS AN ELECTRIC START ENGINE. THE CARBORETOR IS SIDE DRAFT. NOT AN OIL BATH AIR CLEANER. I THINK THAT IT IS THE ORIGINAL ENGINE. BUT IM NOT SURE. ENGINE IS REALLY NICE INSIDE AND I WOULD LIKE TO GET ER GOING. BUT IM NOT SURE WHAT ENGINE I HAVE. I NEED TO KNOW SO I CAN GET PARTS. ALSO WHERE DO YOU ALL GET PARTS FOR THESE VINTAGE ENGINES? THANK YOU. JIMMY IN N.C. :scratchead:
N.C. horserider 5 #2 Posted September 11, 2009 Jimmy first off The best way is take some pictures and post them so we can get a look and see what you have there. Here is a link to help you do that: http://www.wheelhorseforum.com/index.php?showtopic=1071
sorekiwi 761 #3 Posted September 12, 2009 :hide: It sounds like you have the H55, I dont know of any other Tecumsehs that have the oil pump. If it is an H55, its worth saving, there are not many around... Here's a pic of the H55 that was on my 502. They look very similar to the H60, but the h60 doesnt have the indentation in the front cover that the H55's have. My H55 had a 1" crank though... I just freshened mine, rings, valve grind etc. I used H60 rings and gaskets, I dont have a Tecumseh manual close by to check the bore size, but mine was the same as the H60. Hope this helps a bit...
