John2189 542 #1 Posted December 28, 2024 What year is my c165 8 speed? Serial number panel is missing. Everything I’ve looked up for the 16 hp kohler says the spec number should be 71311A. My engine spec is 71311, no A.
Maxwell-8 4,367 #2 Posted December 28, 2024 (edited) Looking at the files: "1984 C-165 8-Speed model 11-16K801 used K341AS-71311 (A not included at Toro or in PSB #301e)" So probably a 1984 c-165 all the rest of the C-165 have Kohler with a A behind the engine code, it looks like. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,493 #6 Posted December 28, 2024 You can use the engine serial number to determine when Kohler made the engine. Still not exact because it could be the current year or the following year. Engines were produced before the tractors. These charts are in the front pages of the Kohler service manuals.

Engine serial starts with 131 so that makes the engine made in 1983.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,493 #8 Posted December 29, 2024 The A that signifies the shallow pan follows the engine model number - K341AS. The S is for electric start. The 71311A spec number would indicate a slight variation of the 71311 spec number. When doing a search 71311A may not show up but 71311 will. At Parts Tree the recognized model is K341-71311 https://www.partstree.com/models/k341-71311-kohler-k-series-engine-made-for-wheel-horse-16hp-11-9kw My guess is the tractor is a 1984 model 11-16K801
Lee1977 7,215 #9 Posted December 29, 2024 The "K" Kohler in you tractor should read - 16 HP If it still has the shaker plate. K341SA 71311 The cover could have been changed or it could have been a mistake at Kohler There was a 1985 312-8 that was wrong had K301SA that should be K301S, HP and number was right.
