hitman5079 0 #1 Posted September 3, 2009 hello i posted a topic the other night in the main area and thought i would try here...i have a 310-8 that wont start has a new battery, ignition switch, and solenoid...i also took the wiring harness out and checked it and have continuity everywhere..and all my safetys are bypassed..still i turn the key and get nothing...any ideas?....thanks a million..mike
nylyon-(Admin) 7,905 #2 Posted September 3, 2009 Things I would do to test. 1. Check for a good ground - Run a jumper cable from the negative battery terminal to engine block and try. 2. Jump solonoid, little wire to post with battery side of solenoid. (Leaving the jumper cable attached from #1) - If it works, then you have a problem between the key and solonoid (safety switched etc.) - If it doesn't work -- - Jump directly from battery to the starter - If it works, then there is a problem with either the solenoid or the wire going from the solenoid to the starter. - If it doesn't work, bring the starter someplace to get tested. hitman5079 0 #3 Posted September 3, 2009 okay coach sir i jumped my ground to the block...and jumped from battery side of solenoid to little post on solenoid, hit the key and it cranked for a second and blew my main fuse...thank you soooo much for your help so far...i feel like im getting somewhere after buyin new parts for 3 days....i now am workin on it with my lap top by my side please feel free to continue helping haha ..i really appreciate it...mike
nylyon-(Admin) 7,905 #4 Posted September 3, 2009 When you jumped from the battery side of the solenoid to the small terminal, it should have started to crank then, you shouldn't have needed the key. Replace the fuse, just try the jumper from the negative side of the batt to the engine, and hit the key. It's sounding like you have a bad ground.
hitman5079 0 #5 Posted September 4, 2009 ok coach..replaced fuse..tried key with just the neg jumper...nothing...jumped from solenoid battery side to little post and it cranked without touchin the key...so u think its in the harness? thank you so much for your time and assistance! hitman5079 0 #6 Posted September 4, 2009 its not the identical solenoid..the guys at the shop didnt have the exact solenoid but they gave me a universal replacement...that make a difference?
chazm 413 #7 Posted September 4, 2009 Hey hitman - There is diff. type of selonoids - But if it cranked when you jumped to small post sounds like it may be wiring problem. - might want to ck wining @ ign. switch. Good luck :scratchead:
nylyon-(Admin) 7,905 #8 Posted September 4, 2009 You mentioned that all your safety switches are bypassed and that you have a new ignition switch. Couple of questions come to mind. Do you have the correct ignition switch? How did you bypass the safety switches?
hitman5079 0 #9 Posted September 4, 2009 i actually bought 2 new ignition switches the first was from a true value hardware store..the guy matched the pins and said it would work...then i went to a lawn mower shop and the guy was positvie i had the wrong switch so he looked up the part number and gave me a oem switch...for 30 bucks and it did nothing haha...as far as the safetys..they were bypassed when i got the tractor 8 years ago..the seat switch and brake switch are soldered together and the pto was left open..i still dont understand why there is no voltage drop...anywhere....im not a wiring genius but i know enough...at least i thought..haha...again thanks for your time!! nylyon-(Admin) 7,905 #10 Posted September 4, 2009 Your problem is either no 12V to the key, (I'm guessing that you can check that by turning on the key, and turn on the lights?) or no 12V from the key. Lights on? yes, you have 12V to the key, no lights, you don't have 12v to the key (or wrong key switch) Or you can check for 12V at the coil with the key on as well. If the lights work, then you have a break in the wire from the key to the solenoid. At that point, you can search for the problem, or just run a wire from the start position on the key to the solenoid.
hitman5079 0 #11 Posted September 6, 2009 okay i checked for 12 v at switch without hittin the key and have none..then took the wiring harness out again and checked it for continuity again..everything is good..however i have a ground lead that goes into a female spade connector and has a post connector pig tailed to it..i also have a lead off of the 5 amp fuse that is black/pink that goes to the same connector set up..are these for optional guages?..also if anyone has a wiring diagram ( that shows wire colors ) they could share with me i would greatly appreciate it! thanks a million! hitman5079 0 #12 Posted September 6, 2009 okay i found that they are for the guages..duh me..but is the main fuse lead supposed to be on the battery terminal or the solenoid? it was originally on the starter side of the solenoid..but the wiring diagram from toro says about a main fuse lead goin to the battery.. :scratchead:
nylyon-(Admin) 7,905 #13 Posted September 8, 2009 The ONLY wire on the starter side of the solenoid should be the wire from the solenoid to the starter. The other side should have a wire directly to the battery and the positive feed to the rest of the tractor. This may be your issue, move the wire to the other side of the solenoid. hitman5079 0 #14 Posted September 8, 2009 ok...please nobody yell ..coach..thank you apparently when i was taking thinks apart..i noted that the main lead was on the other side of the solenoid...what can i say besides i am a complete idiot!..but hey tractor fires right up now! thank you all so much for your time and assistance..hopefully soon i can contribute and help too! thanks everybody..mike :ychain:
Duff 206 #15 Posted September 9, 2009 ok...please nobody yell ...what can i say besides i am a complete idiot!.. Idiot? I don't think so! Capable of making mistakes like every single one of the rest of us - maybe! Don't be hard on yourself, Mike. This whole tractor hobby is one glorious, and very fun, learning curve! Guys here have bailed my butt out of the proverbial sling on several occasions. Welcome to the team! Cheers! Duff :scratchead:
