857 drive belt

Recommended Posts

moe1965

I'm currently working on an 857 the drive belt calls for a 70 inch by half inch belt which is on the machine now it is a brand new belt it still seems to be quite sloppy first gear catches ok but 2 and third the belt slips and that takes off. I wonder if previous owner changed any of the pulleys the drive pulley is 4 inches across and the pulley on the engine is 2 1/2 in across the.  Thanks in advance

My first thought is what shape is the return spring in?  Is it stretched out? Hooked up right?

1/2" X 70" is correct. What is you belt # ?  If you got an A70 that belt is actually 72" long. I have an 857 and the belt that's on it is a 4L700

1/2" x 70" did not work at all on my 857. I switched to a 1/2" x 69" and that solved my belt slipping issue.

@ rig854 , what a concept ?  amazed to see reference to a related movement area , that is also connected to , rusty , connection areas . for me , # 1 is pulley upgrade , same type  / size , with lubrication upgrade , first thing you want is wider bearing side grease shields , never replace with original failure type . also often pictures are looking at  ONE STAGE OF THE FAILURE ISSUE , not the entire  related MOVEMENT HAND OFF .  DOES THAT MAKE SENSE ?  my  pto lever set up , does not scream or squeal , every related  pulley /  movement area , slides with ease .  looks easy to me , detailing  make a difference, pete

It ended up being a somewhat bent belt guard not letting the idler pulley fully take out the slack.

I would think that would have been noisy.
