Slop on Mower Gears

Recommended Posts

Rogue

Hello,

I've heard a couple horror stories about the old wheel horse deck gears. Was told that the lower gear is about 250.00 to have made as they're no longer available. No idea if the the statement is true or not.

Eitherway, I pulled out both of my 60's decks (654 32" & 603 36") Sorry, I don't have model or serial numbers. both have a bit of slop in the gears. I took the covers off and the gears look tight. It seems more to do with the thing in the center of the horizontal gear.

So.... my question being... How much slop is too much and, is what I was told about the horizontal gear true? (or do I just have "sucker" stamped across my forehead)

:hide:

Thanks :scratchead:

Well Ro,

I don't know how much slop is too much, but the one I use on my 854 has quite a bit of slop.

I would make sure the bearings are good and try it. The bearings in mine are in excellent shape and when you engage the deck, it is VERY quiet and smooth. Even with a lot of slop in the gears.

I think the main thing is that the gears are in good condition and the bearings are also in good condition. Keep it well greased and enjoy!
